Therefore, the best you can do to prevent becoming a victim of fraud is to be aware, educate yourself and use good judgment and learn how to spot the warning signs of a scam or scammer before it’s too late.
Be cautious of scams perpetrated by dishonest individuals asking you to send money. We also encourage you to contact your local law enforcement authorities and other consumer protection resources.

• If you are sending money:
o To claim a lottery or prize winnings, or on a promise of receiving a large amount of                money;
o To pay a fee to claim a “guaranteed” credit card or loan;
o To respond to an Internet or phone offer that you are not sure is honest
o To someone you don’t know or whose identity you can’t verify;
o For an emergency situation you haven’t confirmed in another country;
o For a deposit or payment on a rental property;
o To pay taxes to the IRS;
o For a donation to charity;
o For a job opportunity;
o For a mystery shopping assignment;
o To resolve an immigration matter; or
o To pay for something in response to a telemarketing call.
